Our Historic House
Welcome to the Alpha Zeta chapter of Theta Xi, founded in 1928 as one of UCLA’s first fraternities and the very first to have a house on campus. Located in the heart of fraternity row, our house not only carries a rich history but also offers a unique living experience for our brothers.
Since its founding, our house has served as a hub for academic excellence, personal growth, and lifelong friendships.
Here’s a closer look at what makes our chapter house so special.
The History
In 1928, the Alpha Zeta chapter of Theta Xi made its mark by becoming the first fraternity to establish a house at UCLA. As the founders of fraternity row, we even set the standard for the street numbering system used today.
Over the years, the chapter house has undergone various renovations to enhance its facilities and accommodate the evolving needs of its members.
In the early 1950s, a swimming pool was installed, providing a unique recreational feature that distinguished the house from others on fraternity row.
Living in the House
While living in the house is optional, many brothers choose to spend part of their undergraduate years here, benefitting from the unique environment that fosters academic, social, and personal development.
The house provides an affordable alternative to campus housing and includes meals prepared by our in-house chef.
House Amenities
Our chapter house offers a wide range of amenities designed to enhance the living experience:
Sleeping Arrangements: 30 bedrooms and sleeping porches (some with lofts), accommodating 1-3 people each.
Academic Spaces: A quiet, secluded underground library filled with various novels, textbooks, and dictionaries.
Recreational Areas: A living room equipped with a fireplace, billiards, darts, in-door gym, and a TV.
Outdoor Features:
An 800 sq. ft. heated pool (the only working pool on fraternity row!)
A poolside bar, barbecue area, and basketball half-court
Elevated patio with a fire pit and plans for an outdoor gym
Renovations and Projects
Membership dues and alumni contributions support the house’s upkeep and ongoing improvement projects. Recent upgrades include a renovated underground library, an indoor gym, and an backyard patio for recreational use.
The historic charm of the house continues to be preserved and celebrated.
